The Magic of Indian Dance in a Tribute to Tagore : THE FRONT PAGE ONLINE

"On Sunday, April 10, mother and daughter called upon their art to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore, a notable and prolific Bengalese artist whose work encompassed writing, music and painting, and whose accomplishments were recognized with the first Nobel Prize for literature awarded, in 1913, to a non-European. The tribute consisted of an adaptation of Tagore’s Chandalika, about an outcast girl from the “untouchable” class whose encounter with a disciple of Buddha, Ananda, begins as a transcendental experience only to become corrupted by worldly desire."

An Enchanting Dance Recital by India’s Rama Vaidyanathan : THE FRONT PAGE ONLINE

After the evening’s performance at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Center, Shakti Dance Company founder and Bharata Natyam guru Viji Prakash took to the stage and articulated what I had been thinking all along. While the music and dance are richly rewarding for people well-versed in the compositional intricacies of classical Indian music and the kinetic language of Bharata Natyam, the novice aficionado can just as easily and fully be elevated, inspired and moved. The vernacular gives way to the universal, the senses become engaged in the music and costumes, and cultures comes together in a shared experience of beauty.

Ah, I just love classical Indian dance, particularly Bharata Natyam. Which means it was quite the treat to attend the annual program of The Shakti School of Bharata Natyam and its performing arm, the Shakti Dance Company. Read all about it here, at The Front Page Online.
